James Russell, one of the presenters of the TV programme Embarrassing Bodies was this year’s winner of the Private Dentistry Elite 20. The award is part of the Smile Awards organised by the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD).

Mr. Russell is a senior executive at the London Smile Clinic and is well known for his work in cosmetic dentistry. As such, he was approached by Channel 4 to act as the dental expert on the TV programme.

Moreover, James is credited with pioneering and developing new techniques used in dentistry ensuring that treatment is carried out in an ethical and professional manner.

He also teaches and lectures and recently held a joint lecture with a colleague, Luke Barnett at Dentistry LIVE 2012. This focused on a variety of related topics including minimal preparation techniques and cementation of ultra thin ceramic veneers.

He currently teaches on the Inman Aligner hands-on course.

James Russell is also apparently the youngest recipient of the BACD award.

In related news, Ayrshire & Arran’s Oral Health Promotion team managed to take the prestigious award of Best National Smile Month Event at the recent award ceremony organised by the British Dental Health Foundation, (BDHF).

The idea behind these particular awards is to recognise the highest standards of dental care offered in the UK today.

Speaking with reporters, one of the members of the promotion team, Hazel Andrew, Senior Oral Health Promoter for NHS Ayrshire & Arran said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won Best National Smile Month Event. We were honoured to represent the team at such a prestigious event and have our hard work recognised nationally.

“We were so pleased to have been shortlisted for the award, but to win was above all our expectations. Hearing our team name being called out was such a magical moment that we will remember for a long time to come. Although the real stars of the show were the youngsters who took part!”

Dental health promotion is taken very seriously in Ayrshire & Arran. For example, one of the schemes they ran involved no fewer than 300 people including primary school pupils, parents, teachers, dental and pharmacy staff. The aim was to engage everyone in shaping oral health care in the region.
